The company wants money before doing any work, tells you not to contact the credit bureaus, or promises to remove negative information that is accurate. Federal law, the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA), bans these practices. And according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), anything a credit repair company can do legally, you can do yourself for little or no cost.

When your credit report is holding you back, an offer to “fix it fast” is tempting. That is exactly why credit repair is a common target for scams. This guide lists the warning signs the FTC highlights, what the law says a credit repair company must and must not do, and how to check a company before you hand over any money.

7 red flags of a credit repair scam

1. They want payment before doing any work.

The FTC lists this first: scammers insist you pay before they help you. Under CROA, a credit repair company cannot charge you until the service it promised is fully performed.

2. They tell you not to contact the credit bureaus yourself.

You have every right to talk to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion directly. A company that wants to keep you away from them is a warning sign.

3. They tell you to dispute information you know is accurate.

Disputing correct information is not a strategy. The FTC names it as a scam tactic, and no one can legally remove accurate, current information from your report.

4. They promise to remove accurate negative items.

Late payments, collections or a bankruptcy that are reported correctly cannot be removed just because a company asks. A promise to make them disappear is a promise no one can lawfully keep.

5. They offer you a “new credit identity.”

Some schemes have people apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS under false pretenses and use it in place of a Social Security number. The FTC warns that using a number other than your own to apply for credit can lead to fines or prison.

6. They tell you to lie on applications or file a false identity theft report.

Both are on the FTC’s list of scam tactics. CROA also bans advising anyone to make false or misleading statements about their creditworthiness.

7. They do not explain your legal rights or give you a written contract.

A legitimate company must give you a written contract and explain your rights before you sign. If the details stay vague, walk away.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"></circle>
If a company asks for payment before it has done any work, stop there. That single sign is enough to walk away.

What the law says a credit repair company must do

The Credit Repair Organizations Act sets out clear rules. A company that sells credit repair services must:

Give you a written contract that lists the services it will perform, the total cost, how long results will take, any results it guarantees, and your right to cancel.

Let you cancel within three business days without any charge, and give you a cancellation form.

Wait until a service is fully performed before charging you for it.

Never make untrue or misleading statements about what its services can do.

What you can do yourself, for free

The FTC is direct about this: anything a credit repair company can do legally, you can do for yourself for little or no cost.

Get your credit reports. You can check your report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus once a week for free at AnnualCreditReport.com.

Look for errors. Check names, addresses, accounts you do not recognise, payments marked late that were on time, and debts listed more than once.

Dispute errors in writing. Both the credit bureau and the business that supplied the information are responsible for correcting mistakes. Write to both, explain what is wrong, and include copies of your proof.

Keep records. Save copies of every letter, the date you sent it and every reply.

How to check a credit repair company before you sign

Ask for the written contract and read it before you pay anything. Our guide to how much credit repair costs shows what normal pricing looks like.

Check that the contract includes the three-day cancellation right and a cancellation form.

Look up complaints with your state attorney general and in the CFPB consumer complaint database.

Ask exactly what the company will do that you could not do yourself, and how it decides which items to dispute.

Be wary of any promise about specific results or timelines.

If you think you have been scammed

Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and contact your state attorney general and your state consumer protection office. Stop any further payments, and keep copies of your contract, receipts and messages.

Where AI Credit Care fits

AI Credit Care reads your credit reports, highlights items that may be inaccurate, and drafts dispute letters that you review and approve before anything is sent.
